a story about dealing with fear by Dan Culver After Dan's successful Everest climb in 1990 it was often suggested that he write a book about his experience. Being Dan, he wasn't interested in writing about himself any more than he had ever been interested in talking about himself. But the idea simmered in his mind for a while, until he put the suggestion and his beliefs together and wrote a book aimed at young people and addressing the issue of overcoming fear. It's taken seven years, but we're proud to say Dan's book has been published by Sono Nis Press of Victoria, and is now available in bookstores, or by contacting the Foundation. As his widow Patricia writes in her introduction to the book; "From the time he was a young boy, Dan had many dreams and goals for himself and he believed that people were happiest when they listened to their inner ambitions and worked towards them. My Little Everest was a story that Dan created from his experience in life, his Everest expedition and his friendship with (stepson) Ryan in order to share his knowledge about fear with others of all ages. His hope was that young people and their parents or grandparents or aunts or uncles or friends would read it and talk about their own stories of living their dreams and overcoming their fears." Illustrated with some of the beautiful photographs from his 1990 climb, this charming book tells the story of Ryan, a young boy struggling with fears and insecurities, and his uncle Martyn, who helps him to see that being afraid is no reason to stop living his life to the fullest. We are also thrilled to announce that Rick Hansen has written a wonderful foreword for Dan's book. As many of you know, Dan greatly admired Rick (the wheelchair athlete who went around the world on his Man in Motion tour in 1986 and has raised millions for spinal cord research), and we can't think of a better addition to the book. Partial proceeds from the book go towards the Foundation - order yours today!
