Dan Culver
Daniel George Culver
Dan Culver was a remarkable man.  He possessed a ceaseless thirst for new experiences, adventure and knowledge, in his too short life he crammed in  several lifetimes worth of adventure and experience; from creating the largest whitewater rafting company in Western Canada by age 20, to climbing the world's two highest mountains, there was no limit to what his imagination dared him to do.  Always a charismatic presence, Dan was a dynamic leader and entrepreneur who touched and inspired all those he met.

In 1990 he successfully climbed Everest, becoming only the 5th Canadian to do so, despite being one of the climbers on the expedition with the least experience.  In 1993 he set off to climb K2.  The deadliest mountain in the world; it claims the life of one in three souls who attempt the difficult climb.  Sadly, Dan was one of those, but not before he successfully reached the summit.  It is truly difficult for many of us to imagine what drives adventurous souls such as Dan to attempt the things they do, but we continue to be inspired by their lives and feel privileged to have been a part of the adventure.

The Foundation

After Dan died in 1993, his friends and family sought a way to keep his memory and his legacy alive, and created The Dan Culver Follow Your Dream Foundation. This private foundation carries on Dan's interests in nature, youth, community and the environment.  Soon after the Foundation came into being it was called into action to help save Jedediah Island, and was given tremendous support by the many friends and associates of Dan who believed in the same ideals he did.  The current project the Foundation is undertaking is to raise money to support youth leadership programs on Jedediah Island.

One of the many things Dan was passionate about was encouraging young people to realize their dreams.  He mentored individuals, took groups out on his sail boat to let them experience and learn from nature, and at every opportunity encouraged young people to reach for the stars and fulfil their dreams.

The Foundation will continue his work by enabling educators andThe first Dare2Dream team on the water youth organizations to bring young people to Jedediah Island to experience the special magic the island holds, to learn about the environment and  sustainability, and to develop their leadership skills. We intend to create an endowment fund that can be drawn on to provide funding for outdoor programs based on Jedediah.  We want to support programs where youth can work "hands on" with scientists and educators as they explore the ecosystem of the island and any threats to its integrity, learning about the environment and themselves.

Please join us to make this dream a reality!
